Aperture Studios was started four years ago with the goal of providing the Halifax photography community with inexpensive, reliable and accessible photography equipment rentals.

As you may have read or heard, Aperture Studios recently suffered a tremendous loss due to the theft of a large portion of our gear. This has left the studio crippled, as we can no longer provide our clients with the equipment and gear needed for their jobs.

Although Aperture Studios is a business, we have always had a co-operative community mindset. In fact, our original plan had been to open as a co-operative, but after much discussion we agreed that a business for profit would be a better model to serve our clients. As such, we can expand and provide better services to the community before paying our shareholders.

Due to the nature of insurance, it could be months if at all before the cost of the stolen equipment is recovered. Your clients are not going to wait, and while equipment is not the backbone of photography, but it sure does help. No matter how much photographic skill you have, you can’t make a power plug appear in the middle of the woods.

To that end, we have begun fundraising efforts in order to replace the non-duplicate equipment. Aperture Studios is happy to announce a sale on studio hour credits. Our regular rate of $30/hour has been reduced to $20/hour, to be used immediately or in the future. You are welcome to buy as many hours as you like and they will be applied to your account as a credit.

Please feel free to fill out the form below with your information and you will receive an e-mail from Karen in the next 24 hours. With your help we can recover from our loss and continue building a business that benefits everyone in the Halifax photography community.

Thank you for your continued support!

This 2 ½ day hands on workshop focuses on shooting the fine art nude in a studio environment (note: this is not a glamour workshop). The goal of the workshop is to give participants an in depth look into shooting the fine art nude in a range of studio lighting environments.

The Instructor Steve Richard has been shooting for over 30 years and brings a distinctive approach to shooting. Steve has a strong personal style and a unique creative vision when it comes to shooting fine art nudes. In addition to being introduced to a number of studio lighting setups, Steve will share his personal approach to working with models and his method to creating a beautiful world-class image within a very simple framework. Throughout the workshop weekend you will have many opportunities for one-on-one portfolio critiques and reviews.

The workshop is limited to 6 participants and a maximum of 3 photographers per group will be enforced to allow for an excellent model to photographer ratio. This workshop is intended to provide as much shooting time for each photographer as possible while allowing time for questions, critiques and support form the instructor throughout the day. During the workshop there will be five different lighting setups allowing each participant to get 5 – 10 min of individual instruction/coaching from the instructor and 30 min of shooting time for each setup.

All studio lighting and grip equipment will be provided. Participants are required to bring their personal camera equipment, batteries, and memory cards. Lunch and coffee will be provided on Saturday and Sunday. The models will provide a limited model release allowing photographs from the workshop to be used for the photographer’s website(s) and portfolio prints.
